In partnership with the British Council Connect ZA and Okayafrica, South African beats platform Weheartbeat and Cape Town’s Assembly Radio are hosting a two-city tour for the Scottish alt-rap heavyweights, in a never-before witnessed salutation to the boundless experiences and opportunities contemporary live music can create.
The couch sessions are free to attend and will give you the chance to sit down with these groundbreaking artists. Set in a relaxed intimate setting, the meet and greets will be facilitated by Live SA and Livity Africa founder Gavin Weale.
“For Weheartbeat this undertaking is the first of its kind, so collaborating with an alternative hip hop act and juxtaposing their grimy UK sound with the Afro-futuristic elements of South Africa is going to be very exciting,” says Dominique Soma, founder of Weheartbeat.
Young Fathers member Alloysious Massaquoi says: “I get the sense that SA is way ahead of the rest of the world and making much more exciting music than anywhere else. I’m still in disbelief that the music isn’t taking over everywhere. But I believe it should have the opportunity to do that.”
“People in the West often see Africa as a place where only bad things happen, you know, ‘the dark depths of Africa’, when in fact people’s lives are as mundane or as joyful as anywhere,” adds fellow member G Hastings. “I’m hoping to embrace the music, take some inspiration, because from what I’ve heard, it sounds like a dream musically… we try and do this everywhere we go but I’ve got a feeling that South Africa might be a special place.”
The meet and greets will take place in Johannesburg on Thursday 26 February 2015 from 6pm to 9pm at Live SA’s Braamfontein offices and in Cape Town on Monday 2 March from 6.30pm till late at Yours Truly. Free entrance, however you must reserve your place with Live SA http://livemag.co.za/meet-greet-session-young-fathers-invade-sa/.
Young Fathers will play live shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town on the 27 and 28 February alongside some of South Africa’s best in live music, including SAMA winner Card On Spokes, Digital Maskandi artist Mashayabhuqe Kamamba and brand new work from future-sound high-rollers Okmalumkoolkat, Zaki Ibrahim featuring Mr Sakitumi, BIG FKN GUN and A Million Things (Tiago Correia-Paulo of 340ml and Tumi & The Volume-fame.)

XOXO see you there 🙂
Most of you know her as the ‘blonde’ IdolsSA’s Season IV 3rd finalist. Sindi Nene who is popularly know for her hit song titled “Nguwe” has been making waves in the music industry. I took some time out to profile this talented, feisty young lady, who comes all the way from Durban.
Born and raised in KwaZulu Natal (Durban) and partly raised in the North West, she then moved to Kempton Park Johannesburg before returning back to Durban. Sindi discovered her passion for music at a very early age and started composing her own lyrics and melodies, by the age of 12 she was already part of her local church choir. She went on to enrol at Umlazi High School as it was one of the few schools that had music as a subject at a high school level, already she had started working on her set of goals to become a musician.
Her road to stardom started when she auditioned for Mnet’s Idols SA which is known to produce SA’s most talented vocalists. Although Sindi was not the winner of Idols season IV, her journey never ended there. she went on to become the 3rd finalist behind Lloyd Cele and the winner Elvis Blue. Idols was her vehicle to success within the entertainment industry and to date she has worked with some of the pioneers of the South African entertainment industry and is establishing her footprint within the circles.
Soon after her exit on Idols VI, Sindi received numerous recording deal offers but gave first preference to internationally acclaimed label Universal Music due to Idols franchise ties, after a number of discussions and meetings about her contract agreement given to her by the label for her consideration she eventually signed to them in February 2011 for a lucrative 5 album deal.
Her first album was released in November 2011 with the hit single “Nguwe”. It took her three years to write and produce new music for
her next album set for release in 2014. Her first single has also been released titled “See Me Blow”. She worked with a young producer 37Mph to produce the 1st single and all music in the up coming album. Sindi is currently working on her second album “TGE” which she serves as executive Producer too. The album has been described as unique blend of African sounds and popular music.
