XOXO Stay Phly 🙂
Winter’s most pompous texture is velvet. It’s almost time to pull out those velvet blazers that you thought were a single-occasion purchase. This season not only are we allowed to wear velvet as a casual fabric, but more importantly wear a lot of it. Colors are largely dictated by the frosty weather –navies, emeralds and rich burgundies are en vogue.
Total looks are acceptable even for the less daring: go for well-tailored suits or fitted separates. A word of caution to this tale of evening grandeur – velvet doesn’t hide ‘holiday weight’ too well, so portion control is advised.
Black is back! You may ask when was it ever out, to which I remind you of grey and bitter chocolates. But this year runway trendsetters are caught up in black all over – head to toe appropriateness. For those of us who are past the black comfort zone stage, try playing around with textures, but not shades.
Never play around with shades. There is nothing so disappointing as wearing your favourite once-black skinny jeans with a brand new pitch-black turtleneck and raven-wing brogues. Don’t mix and match.
This season seems to be themed. Gentleman themed. The urban dandy, the neo-retro, the posh hipster – whatever the label, this winter’s cutting edge look is a man who prefers suits to jeans and oxfords to sneakers.
The 2013 gentleman does abide by 21st century rules – he’ll wear a parka with a three-piece suit, a leather backpack instead of a proper briefcase or nana’s knitted gloves to keep him warm although dark grey suede would go better with his smart double-breasted coat.
Here’s where the cold becomes bearable. Volume & layers are in. If the entire winter you feel like never leaving your warm home this look is for you. The ready-to-wear coziness comes in the form of oversized cardigans, voluminous and sometimes even futuristic anoraks and all kinds of knitwear from outer space.
Just remember – you are not making an English trifle, so there’s a limit to how many layers you can do. The general rule here is – if you cannot make your hands meet – you are way off track
This will be show’s 7th official spin-off after several countries like Albania & Germany also had their own versions. Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi is to serve as host and co-producer for the African version of the successful TV show.
Tyra was clearly excited when she tweeted:
The show will stick to its original format 12 lucky beauties will be chosen from 8 African countries & will all take part in several photo shoot challenges over the course of 10 episodes with one girl getting eliminated every week.
There is no word on who the judges will be (David Tlale maybe?) but the entire season will be shot on location in Cape Town as from August (No surprise there). The broadcasting rights for the show were given to Mnet Africa & will most likely be aired on one of their channels.

After months of countdowns and frantic designing schedules, one of the most anticipated events on South Africa’s fashion calendar is finally here
Followers of SA Fashion Week’s social media accounts and fashion revellers alike have had their fair share of titillation for months, with endless countdowns and designer updates to one of South Africa’s leading fashion events.
Fashion week starts on Thursday April 11 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and will be a showcase of spring and summer 2013 trends.
More than 30 of South Africa’s signature labels will be showcasing their collections, including well known houses such as Lunar, Tiaan Nagel, Ephymol, Rubicon, Colleen Eitzen, Amanda Laird Cherry alongside newcomers such as Skorzch – winner of fashion week’s talent search in 2012 – and Misshape. Skorzch will be sharing the ramp with old favourite street label Loxion Kulcha and leading menswear designer Ephymol.
The Sheer Glamour Show will kickstart festivities on Thursday and will highlight both fashion and hair trends for summer 2013. Designers will be teaming up with celebrity hairstylists Nthato Mashishi and Matthew Mansoor.
Suzaan Heyns, who dazzled at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week last month, will also be part of the showcase, along with Clive Rundle, Black Coffee, Muntsho, Rubicon, Terrence Bray, Stoned Cherrie and Vesselina Pentcheva. The Sheer Glamour show will feature some of the country’s familiar faces such as 5fm’s Poppy Ntshongwana, Isidingo‘s Jay Anstey and Vuzu TV presenter Dineo Moeketsi modelling the clothes.
According to Samukelisiwe Mkhabela, the public relations officer for fashion week, the highlight of the showcase will be the launch of New York-based South African designer Albertus Swanepoel’s luxury sportswear collection on Friday, April 12.
Sadly, for those still hoping to get passes for the shows this weekend, all tickets have been sold out
