The 4th annual MTN radio awards were held on Saturday April 13th at the Sandton Convention Centre to a huge turnout of journalist, media personalities & everyday people like you & me who just love radio!

Even though these awards aren’t as big as their musical counterparts the SAMAs they are steadily becoming a feature in the social calendar with radio stations & personalities alike that are nominated always looking forward to them each year! This year’s ceremony was fittingly hosted by a popular voice on the airwaves Anele Mdoda, formerly of 5 FM, but now doing a midday show on Highveld Stereo.

According to their website they define the MTN Radio Awards as “a credible, well-judged transparent programme that promotes and recognises excellence in radio” saying that also have hopes of “ensuring that radio remains one of South Africa’s foremost media choices”. MTN Radio Awards Chairman Rich Mkhondo confirmed that over 1000 entries were received and from that the finalists were announced who were to be honoured at the gala dinner on the actual night.

Over 70 awards were handed out and SABC radio stations walked away with almost half! Some of the big winners worth mentioning includes Kaya FM who won Commercial Radio Station of the Year with Bob Mabena’s Breakfast show “180 with Bob Mabena” winning Best Commercial Breakfast Show, Barney Simon from Jacaranda FM won Best Commercial Daytime Show for “The Workzone”, DJ Fresh’s “The Fresh Drive” on 5 FM won Best Commercial Drive Show and Umhlobo Wenene FM won a voters choice award called the “My Station Award”.

Tuks FM & Ukhozi FM were also multiple winners on the night which turned out to be a huge success but the only downside is that 4 years down the line & the awards show is still not broadcast on television yet other award shows like the Crown Gospel Awards get airplay (makes you wonder) and the fact that regional stations such as YFM are still not in contention! They were streamed live on Ukhozi FM to try & cater to the public.
